Departmental Web and Disk
Space Penn State colleges, departments, and official units are
welcome to purchase ITS Web space. An ITS Charge Account (formerly a P-Account)
must be established for charging purposes. Please see cost for departmental Web/disk space fees.
All applicants requesting for-fee or billable services from ITS or
requests funded by a departmental fund, a contract, or a grant must have an ITS
Charge Account set up through ITS in order for the charges to be billed.
Applicants with currently existing ITS Charge Accounts can request additional
services be added to that account by using the
ITS For-Fee Services Request
Form form. Completed ITS
For-Fee Services Request Forms should be sent in duplicate to the
appropriate Dean's office and to the ITS Computer Accounts Office, Room 204 Wagner Building. This account will expire on the termination date specified
though accounts paid through general funds must be reauthorized each fiscal
year. All computer use on this account will be direct billed on a monthly basis
in accordance with procedure #CR2069 dated 08/04/1993. When the dollar amount
listed on the ITS For-Fee Services
Request Form has been exceeded by the account, a notice will be sent to the
account supervisor asking for additional funds or if the account should be
terminated.
You can find out how much space you have left by selecting "Check
quota" at the server https://www.work.psu.edu. The "s" in
"https" represents that the server is secure and that communication with the
server is encrypted. Additional space may be purchased; see cost for details.
Each individual who wishes to use the space must have:
- A Penn State Access Account.
- Personal Web space.
To request Departmental Web Space, fill out the
ITS For-Fee Services Request
Form and select "Departmental Web/Disk Space" from the "Create New Service"
section of the form. If an ITS Charge Account (formerly a P-Account) needs
to be established, please complete the appropriate sections on the first page
of the ITS For-Fee Services
Request Form.
The forms are in PDF format and require the free software
Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please submit the completed form(s) to
the ITS Computer Accounts Office, 204 Wagner Building, University Park or fax to 814-865-9289.
If you have questions or need assistance with your application,
contact the ITS Computer Accounts Office via
e-mail at accounts@psu.edu or by phone at
814-865-4772.
You may select the name for your department's directory on the
application form. Your URL will be in the following form:
http://www.psu.edu/dept/dept_name/ where dept_name is the portion you selected.
Virtual Hosting: A department/college/unit may choose to have its Web site appear to Web users as a separate, standalone host by using a virtual host. Virtual hosts for departmental Web spaces are chosen by the applicant(s). The format would be:
- http://yourdept.psu.edu/ or
https://yourdept.psu.edu/
where yourdept is the name of the one's departmental/college/unit affiliation.
In order to prevent passwords from traversing "in the clear" SSL encryption is required if authentication via the Penn State Access Account is used to control access to a Web site. While SSL encryption itself is sufficient in strength to protect sensitive data such as credit card numbers, human subject data, etc. as it transfers over the network, gathering this kind of data on Web sites being virtually hosted through this service is not supported. If you need to obtain credit card information via your Web site, please refer to the eCommerce Services section of the Administrative Information Services (AIS) Web site, a unit of Information Technology Services (ITS). If you need to gather human subject data via the Web, please refer to the ITS Guideline for the Use of Electronic Surveys.
NOTE: You may choose up to 13 case-sensitive characters for your Departmental space directory name. We recommend that you use all lower-case characters rather than a combination of upper- and lower-case characters. Remember that directory names are case-sensitive. With a combination of upper-and lower-case letters, users may forget the combination or incorrectly type the URL. All lower-case letters are easier to remember. To see the current list
of departmental directories on our server, go to the following URL:
http://www.psu.edu/dept/. As soon as the directory for your department is created, it will appear in the list at that URL. If you have requested a virtual host name, it also will become active within two weeks after your departmental directory is created.
Once your account is established, you can find instructions in the
ITS Web FAQ. For more information, also see the
Web Publishing
Options web page. |
