UNIX General Research and Instructional Services

The UNIX general research and instructional service provides individual faculty, staff, and researchers, along with any requested authorized users, with UNIX services. Space allocations for this service no longer apply due to the 1GB maximum quota available to PASS users. Please see the "Directory Quotas" section of the ITS Secure Server for details. More information about PASS is found on the PASS information page.

UNIX services for research and instruction continue for as long as the user qualifies for a Penn State Access Account or until the user requests that it be terminated. Please see the Penn State Access Account Qualifications for qualifications for specific account types and rules for account creation, suspension and termination.

Requirements: To apply for the UNIX general research and instructional service, you must:

  1. Be a Penn State faculty or staff member.
  2. Have a Penn State Access Account.

To request the UNIX general research and instructional service faculty, staff, or researchers need to select the "UNIX (instructional/research) option" from the list of "General Research/Instructional Services" on the ITS Academic Computing Services Request Form form. Please note that space requests for more than the default amount of 1GB is considered a for fee service.

NOTE: Faculty or staff members can request that students, who need a UNIX Research account for project work, have access to this service by adding student information under the "Users" section of the ITS Academic Computing Services Request Form.

Instead of filling out the form, all Penn State Access Account holders with email services can request UNIX Services for themselves by clicking the "Apply for UNIX" button on the Application for UNIX General Research and Instruction Services Web page. Note: You will be prompted to enter your Penn State Access Account user id and password before the page will display.

If you have questions or need assistance with your application, contact the ITS Computer Accounts Office via e-mail at accounts@psu.edu or by phone at 814-865-4772.
