Penn State Digital Library Service

As of the 2000 spring semester, the Penn State Digital Library service was made available for use.

The Digital Library service is an implemenation of IBM's Content Manager (CM) software, which manages digital information such as scanned images, workgroup business documents, computer generated reports, Web content management (XML/HTML), and more. XML and HTML are computer languages widely used to control the presentation of content on Web pages. Digital media content can be text, full-motion video, audio, graphics, or images. Typically, CM is used to develop a specific, content-based application. However our application of CM, which can be accessed via a Web browser, is universal so that it may be used for any type of content.

The Office of University Relations uses the Digital Library service to manage their large collection of digital images and to share images with the Associated Press and other media contacts. The ITS Financial and Administrative Office also uses it to share business forms. Additional information about IBM's CM can be found via IBM's Web site at http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/cm/.
