ITS UNIX Cluster

The ITS UNIX Cluster is a collection of remote access machines that support teaching and research initiatives at Penn State. All systems use the Penn State Access Account for authentication and provide access to users' respective Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS).

Systems

  • The RS6KLAB cluster is a collection of IBM B80s, each with 4GB of RAM. The hostname is rs6klab.aset.psu.edu.
  • The CBS cluster is a collection of four Sun Sun Fire 280R systems, each with 4GB of RAM and two 900MHz UltraSPARC III+ processors. The hostname is cbs.aset.psu.edu.
  • The machine armstrong.aset.psu.edu is a Sun Sun Fire 280R with 8GB of RAM and two 1.2GHz UltraSPARC-III+ processors.

Requirements
Access to these systems is via a Secure Shell (SSH) version 2 client. Current SSH clients are found via the PACITS Internet Software Distribution Web site at https://downloads.its.psu.edu/.

In order to gain access to the machines referenced above, users must add UNIX service to their respective Penn State Access Accounts. UNIX service is available to faculty, staff and students for research or instructional purposes. To add the UNIX service to a Penn State Access Account, refer to the online application form found at https://www.work.psu.edu/cgi-bin/unix_app/apply_for_unix.cgi.

For general information about this service, please visit the ITS Accounts Services Office Web site and click on the "UNIX" link listed under the "General Research and Instructional Services" heading.

Updates
Please see the ITS UNIX Cluster Update Page for important hardware and software changes.
