Welcome to the Academic Services and Emerging Technologies 2006-07 Annual Report. The report captures the accomplishments that improved and extended services to a broad range of Penn State constituents and service areas.
This year, ASET welcomed its new interim senior director, Phil Devan, as Kevin Morooney made his transition to his new position as the vice provost for information technology. In addition to the many projects and day-to-day services, initiatives, and activities overseen by ASET, ASET also addressed a variety of University-centered priorities, inclusive of Penn State's new online music service with Ruckus, Identity and Access Management, and emergency response communications. In addition, a team representing all ASET units created the ASET Security Best Practices framework, a set of uniform minimum security requirements for the systems, networks, and applications managed and maintained by ASET.
The project focal-points outlined in the Applied Information Technologies section primarily reflect and summarize the numerous, 24x7x365 infrastructure and centralized services AIT provides to ITS, IT units across Penn State, and Penn State students, faculty, and staff.
The project initiatives outlined in the Emerging Technologies section summarize the group's primary strategic directions and activities for this year. In only its fourth year, ET has established a wide footprint of activity in ITS, at Penn State, and nationally.
The Graduate Education and Research Services (GEaRS) section reflects this group's new and continued cutting-edge advances in research computing technology through its partnerships with faculty members and through strong technical collaborations with various technology companies and institutions.
The items noted in the ASET Communications section reflect the activities of ASET's communications role, how it interacts with ITS Marketing and Communications, and its other endeavors that pertain to the coordination of publicity, documentation, and outreach efforts related to academic computing, research computing, and emerging technology initiatives.
Professional Development provides a listing of the variety of work-related activities in which ASET staff members have participated throughout the year.
The Stats Snapshot provides a quick but impressive glance at the numbers associated with some of ASET's primary services and initiatives.
There are some activities that an annual report just can't capture. Implicit to every section in this report is a significant improvement in how ITS is working together to solve problems that lead to new and improved services. There is a blending in information management and expectations and for ITS to remain relevant we must learn how to blend with our peers in ITS, our peers in other administrative units, our peers in academic areas, and our peers nationally. This is by no means easy it requires a tireless commitment to staying informed and informing others. The accomplishments outlined in this report for 2006-07 reflect a tremendous amount of energy poured into working with our peers, without whom none of this could have been made possible.
