GEaRS: Teaching and Outreach

Credit Course Development

AERSP 590 Section 2, Introduction to Computational Science Tools, is a two credit required course for the graduate minor in computational science. During the fall 2006 semester, GEaRS staff developed and conducted a program of introduction and subsequent user support for key computational science programming tools and applications. The course consisted of a series of hands-on sessions, with supporting assignments, and was conducted using the 316 Hammond Linux Lab.

Guest Lectures and/or Student Project Advisors

GEaRS staff regularly provide guest lectures, facilities introductions, software tutorials, and/or more focused student project consultation on HPC and Visualization topics in support of credit courses offered by Penn State faculty. For the 2006-07 reporting period, support was provided for courses in Aerospace Engineering, Architectural Design Studio, Architectural Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Digital Art Studio/History/Criticism, Ecology, Engineering Science, and Physics, among many others.

ITS/GEaRS Seminars Delivered

GEaRS staff provided ITS Training seminars to Penn State faculty and staff on HPC and Visualization topics including: Introduction to High Performance Computing at Penn State, Introduction to MPI (Message Passing Interface), Introduction to OpenMP, Distributed MATLAB, Mathematica, Maple, ANSYS, ABAQUS, Patran/Nastran, Gambit/Fluent, and Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD).

Vendor Workshops Supported

COMSOL workshop: COMSOL is easy-to-use software that is used for solving complex multiphysics problems. Forty-one students attended this hands-on workshop in 316 Hammond Linux Lab, offered in October 2006.

Outreach Activities

GEaRS HPC and Visualization services were represented at this year’s Graduate Student Association Social and Materials Day events. Special outreach sessions conducted in GEaRS' Visualization facilities included the Immersive Environments Lab Open House, Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, College of Engineering Major Nights, Architecture Camp, Penn State Women in Engineering, and State College Area High School CAD students, among many others.
