Windows® Software Update Service at Penn State

Overview

The Microsoft® Windows operating system provides a built in service called "Automatic Updates." This service automatically downloads and installs updates critical to the security of your computer. A companion technology called Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) allows Windows® computers on the Penn State network to obtain automatic updates directly from a local Penn State server rather than from Microsoft®. ITS offers this WSUS service to Penn State faculty, staff, and students as an opt-in service for obtaining critical security updates, service packs, and the latest Microsoft product updates.

If a Windows® computer is a member of Penn State's Active Directory® services domain (commonly referred to as WINAD), it is already configured to get updates from the Penn State WSUS server.University community members who are not members of the WINAD service can also configure their respective computers to receive updates from Penn State's WSUS server. For more details, refer to the Configuration section.

Users who leave the University, will need to make sure that their respective computer settings revert to receiving updates from Microsoft®. The instructions for doing that can be found with our Configuration details.

Requests for information or assistance should be directed to helpdesk@psu.edu.

About WSUS at Penn State

The client can be configured to use certain servers to check for updates. The Penn State WSUS server is windowsupdate.its.psu.edu. It is updated once every day with the latest updates and patches from Microsoft®. Once configured, the WSUS client will query the WSUS server approximately every 22 hours.

The WSUS client allows users to choose from three configuration options while utilizing idle network bandwidth.

NOTE: If you choose notification or auto-download with notification, then you will need to approve the updates in order to install them. When the WSUS client finds a new update, it will place an icon in your system tray. Double-click this icon to approve and install the updates (you must be an administrative user in order to do this.) The WSUS client logs all activities to a log file labeled Windows Update.log. Typically, this file is located in C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.
