This initiative will observe the 802.16 standard making process, as well as manufacturers' incorporation of this recently ratified standard into their respective product offerings. ET will explore and advocate potential uses of fixed broadband wireless to deliver connectivity (e.g. an Integrated Backbone connection) to Penn State locations beyond the reach of the fiber-optic cable-based infrastructure, (e.g. leased spaces in the downtown State College area, outlying agricultural research areas, University Park Airport, PTI Test Track, etc.), as well as provide a means to deliver a path-diverse, out-of-band redundant connection (vis-a-vis the outside plant cable facilities-based IP backbone).

Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) and Administrative Information Services (AIS), also units of ITS.
A white paper, discussing various strategies and courses of action that make sense for Penn State/ITS to pursue, will be produced. In addition, documentation of a working prototype will be prepared.
ET is actively constructing a trial/proof-of-concept broadband wireless link to demonstrate viability as a potential ITS service offering.
