The purpose of the MobileCAT project is to design a Web-based system, which uses the Z39.50 protocol, so that customers of University Libraries can find information readily using a handheld device.
The code for MobileCAT was developed using three-tier architecture. The front end is the browser that comes with (or can be purchased for) a handheld device. The back end is the Z39.50 server at the library. The middle tier is the part developed by ET for this project; it is an Apache Web server that runs Perl code capable of retrieving information from the back end server. The code uses modules that were specifically designed to retrieve data from a z39.50 server.

Staff members from Digital Library Technologies (DLT) and from Emerging Technologies (ET) participated on this project.
Periodic progress reports will be published via this Web site.
After having developed the initial proof of concept, ET has turned over the code to DLT. DLT will tailor the design for their preferences while ET continues to respond to any technical or programming issues.
